WeChat Pay Foreign Card Setup (2026 Guide) WeChat Pay is another essential mobile payment tool in China, and foreign users can now easily set it up with international cards. This guide helps you complete the setup in 3 simple steps.

Step 1: Prepare Required Materials

  • A valid international phone number (can receive SMS verification codes).
  • A valid passport (or foreign permanent resident ID card of China).
  • An international credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard are supported).

Step 2: Set Up WeChat Pay

  1. Download or update WeChat to the latest version on your mobile phone. Register or log in with your international phone number.
  2. Tap “Me” at the bottom right corner, then select “Pay and Services” and “Wallet”.
  3. Tap “Bank Cards” and then “Add a Bank Card”. Read and agree to the WeChat Pay User Service Agreement and Privacy Policy.
  4. Enter your personal information: Fill in your name (as it appears on your passport) and upload a photo of your passport when prompted (for identity verification).
  5. Add your international card: Enter your card number, expiration date, and CVV code. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the verification (usually via SMS code from your bank).
  6. Confirm the setup: Once the card is added successfully, your WeChat Pay is ready to use.

Step 3: Usage Details & Limits

  1. Applicable Scenarios: WeChat Pay can be used for in-store payments, online shopping, food delivery, public transportation, and money transfers (note: international cards do not support red packets or certain money transfer functions).
  2. Transaction Limits:
    • Single transaction limit: 6,500 RMB.
    • Monthly cumulative limit: 50,000 RMB.
    • Annual cumulative limit: 65,000 RMB.
  3. Transaction Fees: Transactions under 200 RMB are fee-free; a 3% transaction fee is applied for single transactions above 200 RMB. Refunds will reimburse the transaction fee proportionally.
  4. Exchange Rate: The exchange rate is calculated based on your card’s issuing bank and card organization (Visa/Mastercard) rates.

Important Tips

  • You do not need a Chinese (+86) phone number to set up WeChat Pay; your international phone number is sufficient.
  • Ensure your passport information is clear when uploading to avoid verification failure.
